Equine Decision Science Launches EDS Optimus, Giving an Independent Score of a Flat Racehorse’s True Potential — Before It Even Exists

New technology grades potential at the breeding decision, and again in the paddock, giving breeders, owners and buyers an independent read no pedigree page, sale ring or marketing budget can supply.

LONDON, 31 August 2026 — Equine Decision Science, today announced the launch of EDS Optimus, a rating built on academic research that grades a flat racehorse’s true potential before it sets foot on a track — and before it is born.

EDS Optimus itself is bespoke technology, drawn from academic research — built specifically for the racing industry, not adapted from a generic AI model.

Where human judgement can hold only so many variables in mind at once, EDS Optimus reasons like a grandmaster playing fifteen different boards of chess at the same time, each layered on top of the last — weighing the relevant factors, not just pedigree, physiology and form, across thousands of permutations at once, forgetting nothing, and carrying no favourite stallion or line into the room.

Built on precisely what research proved to matter, tested through advanced mathematics and refined through iterations to improve accuracy, EDS Optimus operates at the two seminal moments when the industry has the most at stake: the breeding decision, and the point of purchase. At the breeding stage, it scores a specific stallion-and-mare pairing for progeny potential, in either direction — a stallion owner assessing mares, or a mare owner assessing stallions worldwide. In the paddock or sale ring, it gives buyers an independent read on a horse’s potential ahead of purchase, so a decision that has long rested on presentation, pedigree and reputation can instead rest on evidence. This clarity helps a prospective owner choose between syndicates, weighing the true potential of the horses already running, or about to be bought, before any commitment is made. Importantly, the decision itself always stays with the buyer: EDS Optimus supplies the evidence, not the choice, so it can be weighed against their own budget, ambitions and options.

Every scored horse receives an EDS Optimus Score, secured by a digital certificate whose QR code can be recorded in the horse’s passport for life — travelling with the horse from owner to owner, and giving buyers at auction a verification that cannot be falsified. The Score itself can be generated at great speed, ranking a horse in moments rather than days — a practical advantage in the live pace of the auction ring, where a decision often has to be made before the hammer falls. For a quick read in the sale ring or in conversation, that Score also translates into a six-star rating. Ratings cluster where ability naturally does — around the middle of the scale — but the sixth star sits apart from the rest: a distinct tier reserved for the rare horse whose potential stands clearly above the field — the black swan, the outlier.

The idea behind EDS Optimus took hold while its founder, Emma Hawkins-Haile, was watching the equestrian events at the 2012 Olympics — struck by how many people, and how many years of hope, sit behind a single horse’s career: breeder, owner, trainer, jockey, and the horse itself. A conversation with a friend who stands stallions sharpened the point — he described mares routinely sent to a more expensive, better-marketed stallion over one with markedly better genetic performance potential, for want of independent information or unconscious bias.

EDS Optimus ranks horses specifically for their potential to succeed in flat racing. The underlying technology has been built and proven across flat and jump racing, dressage, show jumping and eventing — but Equine Decision Science is launching with flat racing first, with jump racing and other disciplines to follow, each with their own bespoke technology by discipline. The company is also in discussions with sales houses to bring the Score into the auction process.

EDS Optimus was developed through privately funded academic research spanning a series of projects through University College London’s MEng Computer Science programme. Founder Emma Hawkins-Haile funded the work and was herself an integral member of the team and one of its academic supervisors throughout, alongside researchers from China, England, Germany and the United States, at a time when the term “neural network” appeared as little more than a single line in an academic paper, years before artificial intelligence entered the industry’s everyday vocabulary.

In one retrospective case study, the model was applied to Frankel — rated by Timeform as the finest racehorse of all time — and its full siblings by his dam, Kind, accurately reflecting their potential relative to his. The same analysis identified other stallions available at the time whose pairing with Kind would have offered still greater potential, information EDS Optimus now puts in front of breeders before a mating ever takes place. The ability to rate a horse on the ground, before it has raced, is itself a material advantage for the owners and buyers who rely on it.

This launch marks the first move in a wider ambition. Equine Decision Science is in conversations to give owners and buyers access to financing for their purchases, and has a private service to source, buy and manage bloodstock portfolios on clients’ behalf, attended at every stage. The company is also opening its ambassador programme to individuals who share its vision for the sport. The ambition behind it is a simple one: to become to the racing industry what Sotheby’s is to art.
